I've been trying to figure out how I could record demos, or rather how I could replace all the equipment I would need. I've just hit upon something. An idea.
Since it's highly unlikely I'll have the money to but any real equipment soon, I'll have to improvise. I used to ping pong between tape decks. That technique worked rather well, even if it did result in very muddy mixes. Now, however, if I were to apply the same technique, except for the fact that I would be using two DAT decks, I could approach the same, or even better, quality that I would get from a 4-track. Using digital tape, the only sound degradation would be the signal lost through the patch cords themselves, and that could be minimized with the use of cables such as Monster Cable's phase reference.
Jesus. This is an idea. I could better a 4-track. And with the lowered price on DAT decks, I could get awesome sound quality for the price of a major 4-track deck, and I wouldn't have to worry about buying a DAT deck to mix down on.
I already have a six channel mixer, so if I were to buy another mixer, like the cheap sixteen channel Fostex in Musician's Friend, and dig deep into my bag of tricks, I could do all sorts of wonderful and unnatural things.
But, most importantly, I could take the credit on the card we're expecting and go
ahead and buy another M1. That would let me get on with my tinkering. As I went on, I could buy signal processors and such. I would still need some kind of guitar processor, which would mean figuring out how to get an SGX-1000, but the basics would already be in place.
Jesus. I like this.
