My heart broke tonight over the nightmare America has become. I feel like I went to sleep one night in the greatest country on Earth, and woke up the next morning in some bizarre alternate reality. What got me started along this line is the recent report by the Red Cross about the United States' use of torture in Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib. Is this the country that our forefathers sacrificed and died to establish? That we be torturers? The thing that just kills me is how Christians seem to line up and find no problem with this, saying things like "they would do it to us" without understanding that this is no excuse! We're supposed to be better than that. We're supposed to be the beacon of freedom and justice to the world. Not its inquisitors!

I don't know what bothers me more; that the United States can conduct torture as a matter of policy, or that so many Americans don't have a problem with it.
