Listening to two local drivers on the CB talking about damages to their homes and others. Each knew a handful of people who lost their homes. One talked about an area near Slidell where “the smell is incredible.” There is a poignancy to hearing these locals talk matter-of-factly about the damage and personal cost that will never be captured in a news story. When you're this close to New Orleans it's no longer an abstract news event.
