I wasn't going to mention this because I haven't had time to research it and learn all the particulars, but it looks like the HBO series Sex and the City slammed Charlotte, North Carolina (and North Carolinians in general by association) in their last episode. I saw a clip on the local news, and it was typical stereotype. A couple from North Carolina (yes, the guy was wearing a baseball cap) were sitting at a table with some series regulars, and were saying something to the effect of "Gollee. We've never been to New York City before." They both looked quite inbred and somewhat unwashed, and it didn't sit too well with me. Do the people who write this shit really think that this is what North Carolinians are like?

The following is a quote from the official web site:

Hoping to adopt a baby, Charlotte and Harry host an expectant couple from North Carolina, with the intent of acquiring their unborn child. Unfortunately, the Goldenblatts feel more depressed than ever when the parents change their mind.

Oh. Fucking great. They're importing children from North Carolina like it's a third world country or something.

This is how the casting directors described the roles of the couple:

"Wayne", Caucasian, 20s. He is the loyal and honest boyfriend of Amber. Like his girlfriend, Wayne is also shy and soft-spoken, and is a bit overwhelmed to be so far away from North Carolina. He and Amber make the perfect couple. The good-natured, unsophisticated Wayne feels a little out of place in Paris.

"Amber", Caucasian, 20s. A pretty but shy young southern woman who is traveling in Europe with her boyfriend. Amber is from Charlotte, North Carolina and is enthusiastic to be in France for the first time.

It might not have bothered me as much if it had played like that, which doesn't play so much into the stereotypes. But in the clip I saw the couple came across as a couple of bumpkins. Leave it to a series principally set in New York City to find a way to insult Southerners in its final episode. And, damn. I was just given a reason to hate a series that's going off the air. I hadn't had an opinion on it until now.
